Artist Bio
Carlalberto Consolo (b. 1986, Messina, Italy) is an Italian visual artist based in Catania. Using photography as his primary medium, his practice explores memory, perception, and identity through long-term projects situated between documentary and conceptual research. His work investigates the Mediterranean as both a physical landscape and a psychological territory, where silence, absence, and the passage of time become central narrative elements. Through a restrained visual language, he seeks to reveal the invisible dimensions of everyday life. He lives and works in Catania, Sicily, where he co-founded PHORISMA, an independent cultural association dedicated to contemporary photography and visual culture.
Statement
The Mediterranean is often imagined as a place of light, endless summers, and tourism. This project stems from a desire to explore what remains once that narrative fades away. Photographed during winter on the island of Stromboli, these images portray a place stripped of its seasonal identity, where silence replaces noise, time slows down, and everyday life resurfaces beneath the veneer of the tourist imagination. Rather than describing a location, the project reflects on permanence, waiting, and solitude, offering a vision of the Mediterranean that moves beyond familiar stereotypes.
