Deborah Saks: Circles of Life

Deborah Saks is an artist originally from the East Coast of the United States, who has been living in Liverpool since 2022. With a background in photography and design, Deborah unexpectedly found her way into collage after attending a workshop led by Rosemary Luckett at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center in Alexandria, Virginia. This was a key moment in which she encountered the medium of collage and became captivated by it. Collage opens up possibilities for exciting, innovative ideas and new areas of interest.

Layers of Becoming

Deborah creates her collages using hand-cut paper and materials such as vintage and archival papers, newspapers, maps, sheet music, old and contemporary magazines, as well as antique ribbons and buttons. She loves how paper adds texture and layers, making it an exceptionally versatile art form.

Her approach to collage is highly experimental, allowing her to explore patterns and compositions as they naturally unfold. Her collages are complex and vibrant, full of rhythm and movement, and radiate energy.

Through this abstract series, “Circles of Life,” which she began in 2020 and continues to this day, Deborah explores the trajectory of life, the choices we make, the power of change, growth, rebirth, and various human emotions such as grief, pain, despair, love, and passion. Through bold and vibrant colours and textures in circular forms, she represents the unlimited possibilities and endless stories that make up a life, through memories, movement, and directions that unfold over time.
